Music That Speaks to Your Soul
Music plays a big part in our spiritual lives, but most of the time, perhaps because it so prevalent, we don't give it much thought. We know what we like and we play it. There are songs we play when we are happy, songs that bring us solace when we are sad. Music can be a source of wisdom, understanding, inspiration, and consolation. Certain songs give us words to describe our experiences. And they go beyond words. A certain riff or beat or modulation can speak just as powerfully as the words themselves. And it can range from classical to rap and everything in between.
I was reminded of this in recent weeks when I was writing my Easter sermon, which I always do to the music of Mumford and Sons, which for me, and for many, is music very much about the spiritual, the soul, and resurrection. When I started writing I just put the music on automatically and only later realized how much the music, the Easter story, and my own story are so interconnected.
